Ballarat District Golf Incorporated

2019 06 vic country boys

The Ballarat District Golf – Boys Representative Team competed in the Golf Australia – 2019 Victorian Junior Boys Country Regions, played at the Cobram Barooga Golf Club on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May.

Played in conjunction with the Victorian Men’s, Colts and Boys Country Championships and the Cobram Barooga Open Amateur, all of our players also qualified to compete in the individual events.

Our team consisted of Paddy Murphy (Ballarat GC), Kacee Kirwan-Hamilton (Ballarat GC), Ryan Wilson (Ballarat GC), Jarryd Martin (Bacchus Marsh West GC), Joel Smith (Buninyong GC), Liam Howlett (Ballarat GC), Nicholas Crellin (Ballarat GC), Thomas Yorke (Ballarat GC), Charlie Bissinella (Ballarat GC) and Manish Puvanendran (Maryborough GC).

The competition was played over two stroke rounds, with seven country district golf associations competing. For each round, the top six scores counted as the team score for the stroke competition and the top six net scores counted as the team score for the net competition.

Our debutants this year included Ryan Wilson, Liam Howlett, Thomas Yorke and Manish Puvanendran. Ryan is ranked number three locally, whilst Liam at only 12 years of age is already ranked number six.

With an average age of just under 15 and an average handicap of 9.6, heading into the competition we recognised that our team was still at least 12 months away from challenging for the stroke title, however a top four finish seemed like an achievable goal. The majority of our players were well prepared, having played a significant amount of golf in the lead up to the competition and we felt that if we performed to our potential, challenging for the net title was a distinct possibility.

Despite perfect weather conditions for golf on both days, our team struggled, finishing in sixth position in both the stroke and net competitions. Congratulations to South Western on winning the stroke title for the fourth year in a row and North Eastern on winning the net title.

  • Our number one player, Paddy Murphy overcame illness and finished in 31st position in the boys stroke event
  • On debut, Thomas Yorke finished in 33rd position in the boys stroke event and in 5th position in the boys net event

In reviewing our performance, whilst it was disappointing not to go close to achieving the goals that we set for ourselves, it is important to note that of the 58 players who competed, only four played to their handicap over the 36 holes.

Pleasingly, our players:

  • Prepared well for the competition by playing in a number of tournaments and representing their respective clubs in Ballarat District Golf – Junior Pennant
  • Took full advantage of having Andrew Cartledge involved in the program by committing to the training conducted in the lead up to the competition
  • Represented Ballarat District Golf with a sense of pride and displayed a level of sportsmanship and behaviour that was beyond reproach

Many thanks to:

  • Andrew Cartledge (PGA Teaching Professional – Ballarat Junior Golf Academy) for his guidance and tuition in the lead up to and throughout the competition
  • Ron Adams (Secretary – Ballarat District Golf) for assisting with team administration and supervision
  • Gabby and Justin Howlett for washing the playing uniforms during the competition
  • The Committee of Ballarat District Golf for their ongoing support of junior golf
