Golf Victoria 2018 Junior Boys Country Regions Competition
The BDGI Junior Boys Representative Team competed in the Golf Victoria 2018 Junior Boys Country Regions Competition, played on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th February at the Rosebud Country Club.
Played in conjunction with the Victorian Men’s, Colts and Boys Country Championships, all of our players also qualified to compete in the individual boys events.
Our team consisted of Jack Smith (Ballarat GC), David O’Donnell (Buninyong GC), Paddy Murphy (Buninyong GC), Oliver Hodge (Ballarat GC), Jarryd Martin (Bacchus Marsh West GC), Kacee Kirwan-Hamilton (Ballarat GC), Brandyn Davidson (Ballarat GC), Charlie Bissinella (Mount Xavier GC), Joel Smith (Buninyong GC) and Nicholas Crellin (Ballarat GC).
The Junior Country Boys Regions Competition was played over two stroke rounds, with nine districts competing for gross and nett honours. Each team was made up of nine players, with the top six scores counting for each round.
Fielding a young team, including five players representing BDGI for the first time, the boys demonstrated that they are very talented and will be highly competitive at this level in the years to come. After finishing last in the gross event in 2017, the boys finished in a creditable seventh position this year. Congratulations to South Western on winning the title for the third year in a row.
We had an expectation of performing strongly in the nett event and despite struggling in tough conditions on day one, the boys climbed the leader board on day two to finish in fourth position. Congratulations to Western on winning the handicap section.
Highlights:
- David O’Donnell – Recently resumed playing golf and was our best performer in the Boys Gross Event
- Jarryd Martin, Joel Smith, David O’Donnell and Nicholas Crellin all finished in the top 20 in the Boys Nett Event
In reviewing our performance, it was pleasing to note that that the team:
- Prepared well for the competition by playing in a number of tournaments and representing their respective clubs in BDGI Junior Pennant
- Took full advantage of having Andrew Cartledge (PGA Teaching Professional) involved in the program by committing to the training sessions conducted in the lead up to the competition
- Represented BDGI with a sense of pride and displayed a level of sportsmanship and behaviour that was beyond reproach
Many thanks to:
- Andrew Cartledge for his guidance and tuition in the lead up to and throughout the competition
- Ron Adams (BDGI Secretary) for assisting with team administration and supervision
- The BDGI Committee for their ongoing support of junior golf
