2019 10 junior girls presenationOn Thursday 19th September over 40 people attended a presentation dinner held at the Ballarat Golf Club to celebrate the success of the Ballarat District Golf – 2018/19 Girls Development Squad program.

One of the key objectives of Ballarat District Golf is to grow junior participation, by:

  • Supporting our affiliated clubs with the promotion and delivery of club-based activities and programs
  • Promoting and delivering a range of activities and programs
  • Providing a pathway to the WestVic Academy of Sport and Golf Australia’s elite programs

The Girls Development Squad is Ballarat District Golf’s largest junior pathway program and the only initiative of its type in the state, with 16 activities delivered between November 2018 and August 2019.

In establishing the program, Ballarat District Golf recognised that girls who participate in introductory golf programs often do not transition into junior club membership, maintain a junior club membership and/or progress along Golf Australia’s junior participation pathway. In designing the program, we identified many of the barriers and motivators for girls to participate in golf and endeavoured to address them.

21 girls aged between 9 and 18 accepted an invitation to participate in the 2018/19 program. Squad members were provided with:

  • The opportunity to play regularly together
  • Access to expert coaching
  • Playing uniforms
  • The opportunity to compete in Golf Australia junior events
  • A pathway to the WestVic Academy of Sport and Golf Australia elite programs

Over the duration of the program, the squad achieved some fantastic results, including:

  • 11 squad members now hold a Golf Australia handicap

    - U/15 Girls District Champion: Taruni Prasad (Bacchus Marsh West GC)
